I’m Diane Desotelle,

and I’m running for

Duluth City Council District 2

Your Voice for Our City

I believe that when we all pitch in, we can make the changes we want to see.

As a civil engineer and natural resource planner, I know what it takes to build and maintain good water, sewer, and road systems. I’ve owned a small business and I’ve taught in our schools. I’ve worked to preserve and restore our public green spaces. As a volunteer, I’ve advocated for affordable housing. In my work for the city, I understand what it takes to fund and support the work needed for projects that serve us all.

As Duluth’s first Natural Resources Coordinator, I worked for the preservation of thousands of acres of Duluth’s open spaces that were susceptible to future development. From my work with the state as the St. Louis River Area of Concern program coordinator, I was involved in hundreds of acres of habitat restoration. In my years with the city, I worked with partners including the federal government, Tribes, and local nonprofits. All this work in “bringing the river back” has brought in new development.

Although Duluth faces complex issues, there are practical steps we can take, and it’s time to get to work. I’m dedicated to the following:

  • Encouraging local investment and attracting new markets for a more sustainable local economy,

  • Stewardship of our parks, trails and natural systems,

  • Tackling Duluth’s housing and homelessness issues,

  • Unleashing the power of volunteers in our community,

  • Educating our citizens about planning for climate change.

My husband, Andrew Streitz, and I have lived in the same house in Duluth’s 2nd District since 1998. We’ve raised two children who are proud graduates of Duluth Public Schools. I’ve been a proud union member with the Minnesota Association of Professional Employees (MAPE), Duluth Federation of Teachers (DFT), and AFSCME (American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees). I’ve biked or taken the bus to work, and I enjoy hiking or skiing Duluth’s incredible trails. I love to play guitar and garden and have the calluses to prove it.

I’ve seen what can be accomplished when City Councilors and everyday Duluthians work together. District 2 deserves a Councilor who will listen, learn, and work with you to seek a solution, and I would be honored to serve our community.

I’m aware of the challenges Duluth is facing and energized by the possibilities. I strongly believe that Duluth has a secret untapped power: the power of our citizens. I’m excited about what we can accomplish together.
